This initiative is in accordance with the EU Youth Strategy, as it aims to empower young individuals residing in rural locales. Our goal is to provide training for youth workers and equip young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) from rural regions with fundamental skills essential for employability and entrepreneurship, while also fostering innovation, renewal, and entrepreneurship within rural communities.

In rural areas, significant challenges persist, including limited employment prospects, inadequate access to essential services such as education, and a dearth of engaging opportunities. These obstacles hinder the development and well-being of residents, particularly the youth, who play a pivotal role in societal progress, as emphasized by the Council of the EU in 2018 and the EU Youth Strategy.

It’s imperative that policies and initiatives address these hurdles and prioritize the welfare of young people in rural regions. However, the current rural landscape often fails to meet the aspirations of youth, prompting many to seek greener pastures elsewhere, thereby exacerbating issues like depopulation and demographic aging. According to data from the European Commission, although rural areas cover 80% of the EU’s territory, they house only around 30% of its population. Moreover, from 2015 to 2020, rural populations dwindled by an average of 0.1% annually, while urban areas experienced growth at a rate of 0.4% per year.

When young individuals opt to remain in rural communities, they frequently encounter social and economic marginalization, contributing to phenomena like NEET status (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) and high rates of youth unemployment, as reported by Eurostat in 2021. This perpetuates a cycle of diminished access to essential services and limited job opportunities, perpetuating their disenfranchisement.

Despite incremental advancements, substantial work remains to be done. This serves as the driving force behind our project: to catalyze social transformation in rural areas, particularly among vulnerable demographics like NEETs. Our aim is to empower young people to overcome systemic barriers and build thriving, sustainable communities.
